MONORAUM presents Frames, a four-track EP of contemporary piano-led compositions, out via Mesh on Friday 7th August.
Originally from Lviv, Ukraine, Yaroslav Molochnyk aka MONORAUM moved to Dresden as a teenager to study piano at the conservatory, and has since been based there living as a concert pianist and composer. For this new release on Mesh, he employs minimalist techniques and virtuosic playing to invite ‘honest presence’ from the listener, building a surround where purity of sound becomes a mirror for emotion and imagination.
‘Equilibrium’ opens with arpeggiated fragments weaving around miniscule electronic details, setting up a space for contemplation. ‘Refractions’ allows echoing melodic cascades to run through slight detunings and dynamic fluctuations before reaching a moment of catharsis. On ‘Transcendence’, delicate midi wanderings flow through subtle processes that gradually build, eventually arriving at a maximalist burst of trance-like euphoria. Closing things off, ‘Tokyo Intersection’ builds upright bass rhythms and piano runs set to an irregular metre that spiral through chromatic steps and harmonic sequences.
With Frames, MONORAUM offers a quietly powerful meditation on the act of listening.
