This intimate event brought together perspectives from music, technology and research in a unique, friendly and interactive community event to explore the frontiers and foundations of the spatial sound creative experience.
A sold-out audience gathered together for an afternoon of exploration, inspiration and discovery around spatial audio, followed by live performances by Max Cooper and Llyr as the finale to the 4DSOUND x Mesh residency at Stone Nest.

Special guests
Angela McArthur & Emma Margetson - SOUND/IMAGE Research Centre (University of Greenwich) & University College London
Angela is an artist and academic at the Sound/Image Research Centre (University of Greenwich) and a lecturer at UCL. In 2020-21 she was in residence at NTNU Norway, creating spatial audio-visual works about ocean environments. In 2019 she was in residence at the Institut für Elektronische Musik (IEM) in Graz, making spatial sound installations representing ‘othered’ voices. Her research interests include spatial aesthetics, underrepresented and non-human onto-epistemologies. She champions diversity, and theorises through practice. She's worked in studio, live and location environments and founded Soundstack, an annual series of workshops, masterclasses and concerts about spatial sound aesthetics. She initiated the first UK tour of IKO works in 2019.
Dr. Emma Margetson is an acousmatic composer and sound artist. Her research interests include sound diffusion and spatialisation practices; site specific works, sound walks and installations; audience development and engagement; and community music practice. She has received a variety of awards and special mentions for her work including, first prize in the prestigious L'Espace du Son International Spatialisation Competition by INFLUX (Musiques & Recherches), klingt gut! Young Artist Award in 2018 and Ars Electronica Forum Wallis 2019. She is currently a Lecturer in Sound Design and Research Fellow in Audiovisual Space: Recontextualising Sound-Image Media at the University of Greenwich. www.emmamargetson.co.uk

Atsushi Suganuma - Senior Manager, Sound Design at Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe Ltd.
Atsushi worked at Square-Enix as Audio Director and then at CD Projekt Red in Poland as Audio Director, 18 years in the game industry with 11 years in leadership of talented audio professionals in Japan, Europe and currently in the UK. Recent AAA game credits include FINAL FANTASY XIII series, FINAL FANTASY XV, FINAL FANTASY VII Remake, Dragon Quest X, Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Next-gen and more. The most recent global recognition and awards nominations from those game titles are The Game Awards, NAVGTR Awards, Hollywood Music in Media Awards, Game Audio Network Guild Awards, CEDEC Awards to name a few.
Atsushi is an active speaker and a passionate contributor to the game audio community globally, such as Game Audio Network Guild, working alongside with industry-leading highly talented professionals to advocate and foster the community globally to further pursue excellence in-game audio. He participated in conferences and panels such as Game Developers Conference, The Society of Composers and Lyricists, Berklee College of Music, Audio Engineering Society, IGDA and CEDEC.

Fiona Miller - University of Sussex
Fiona Miller is a doctoral researcher on Leverhulme's Sensation and Perception to Awareness Doctoral Scholarship Programme, where she explores the effects of audible frequencies on the mind, brain, and body. Her research combines the fields of music and neuroscience, investigating the potential of sound as a tool for improving autonomic health and self-regulation by measuring its impact on biosignals. As an interdisciplinary researcher with a background in music, Fiona completed an MA in Sonic Arts and Composition before spending several years in advertising, working closely with a music streaming service client. It was during this time that she developed a deep fascination with the potential of sound as a therapeutic tool.
Heather Stark - Event curator
Heather's current projects focus on creative technologies and the experiences they enable. She has worked across quant and qual methods in user experience research, including work on 3D and streaming technologies, in video games analytics, in early stage venture development, as a technology analyst, and as a Research Fellow in psychology.
Katherine Templar-Lewis & Robyn Landau - Neuroaesthetics researchers, Kinda Studios
Kinda Studios is a women-led neuroaesthetics studio translating and applying neuroscience research into creative experiences. Exploring states of being at the intersection of the artistic, scientific, cultural and technological, they lead pioneering work across sonic, visual, and immersive landscapes.
Llyr (Gareth Williams) - Musician, Mesh
Llyr makes music and sonic ecosystems. A protagonist of total audio immersion, he creates experiences both visceral and thought-provoking through his productions, multi-channel sound installations, live shows and DJ performances. With one foot in the rave and the other committed to widescreen dynamics, dancefloor bangers sit side-by-side with textural ambient, sweeping harmonies and freeform electronica.
Max Cooper - Audio-visual artist, Mesh
Max Cooper has carved a unique space as an audio-visual artist with a science PhD and an international reputation as a leading electronic musician. His work carries an emotional resonance and sensory immersion, often focusing on humanity’s place in the world. He merges electronic music and visual art with scientific enquiry through installations, live performance, immersive audio-visual experiences, a range of digital media and award-winning music videos.
Poul Holleman - Director of 4DSOUND
Poul Holleman is co-founder and director of the spatial sound and creative development studio 4DSOUND. As a creative technologist, Poul is interested in the application of spatial sound to a variety of artforms, ranging from light installations to kinetic architecture and live performances. His work focuses on the continuous development and exploration of spatial sound as an emerging artistic medium, through the use of 4DSOUND technology. He is a lecturer at the Creative Systems Design and Spatial Audio programmes at Utrecht University of the Arts. Next to his artistic achievements, Poul holds a Master’s degree in Cultural Sociology from University of Amsterdam.
Zoe Cormier - Author
An author and journalist with a background in zoology coupled with an upbringing and career in the music industry.
