Forest Lung EP
Forest Lung is a new collaborative EP from vocalist and sound artist Kate Fleur Young and Mesh regular Llyr, working together as Ghostbirds, built from vocal recordings made in the rainforests of Brazil and Ecuador, and reshaped into dense sound system music.
Bringing Kate’s vocal recordings into intricate, club-rooted productions, Forest Lung is an EP built for big speakers. Informed by time spent in the rainforest studying the sacred chants of the Yawanawa people in Brazil, these recordings are left largely intact, with phrasing, breath, and tone remaining as honest takes that are then processed and layered with fragments and edits throughout the EP.
In a genuine two-way exchange, a shared musical vocabulary was developed where Llyr responded to Kate’s vocal and field recording transmissions with productions that range from complex percussive club forms to stripped back arrangements. Voice, texture, and pulse spiral through kaleidoscopic lenses, conjuring a profound physical intensity, be it through beating rhythms, or intimate sonic encounters.
‘Night Spirits’ opens with hand-shaped analogue bass and gated snares, above which a chorus of pointillistic fragments and a burning lead vocal from Kate, seemingly pushed to breaking-point through a burnt-out PA, intertwine among edits galore. ‘Serena’ - named after the river in Ecuador whose waters underpin the track - combines yearning vocals with melancholic piano chords extruded into despairing swells and the mechanical creak of pedals, hammers and strings, all decorated by the glitches of a dying analogue synth. ‘Morning Prayer’ rolls with steppy techno drums over a golden-era drum & bass bassline, forged from Kate's own voice, and ethereal breakdowns to usher in the dawn. Closing the EP, ‘Ghost Bird’ takes vocal mimicry of the Potoo or Ghost Bird’s distinctive song and playfully harmonises it through the club, ending with an infectious, uplifting call to dance.
Treating the rainforest as a living presence and carrying it into a new context, Forest Lung finds two artists in a call and response where each voice carries equal weight and retains its authenticity.
